MkvConvert is a free program that converts MKV files to the AVI format. This program will do this using the XVid codec to convert to the AVI format. It is also able to convert FLV and MP4 videos to AVI, or AVI video files to VOB. MkvConvert is also able to rip the contents of a DVD, saving the video in the AVI format.
This utility performs the conversion in two passes, to improve the quality of the final file. It also allows the users to preview the file they're about to convert, and set the start and end points for the conversion in the process. When converting the video files, you can select if you want to use the AC3 or the MP3 codec for the audio. You will also be able to select the video definition, the audio and video bitrate. If you want, you can disable the 2-pass conversion, enabled by default. It is also possible to use this program to join a series of video files into a new AVI file. You can use the interface to set the volume that you wish to apply to the new video. This program is absolutely free, and does not place any watermarks on the video files generated.
